AT A GLANCE
The Ruvuma Wilderness Project, a collaboration between Carbon Tanzania and Revalue, is one of Africa’s largest community-led forest carbon initiatives.
Ruvuma credits are designed under Revalue's Model R, the best-rated avoidance approach by Sylvera. Model R introduces LiDAR for more accurate biomass measurements, and the first dynamic baseline deployed in an avoidance project.

PARTNERSHIP
The project is a groundbreaking collaboration between Revalue and Carbon Tanzania, combining cutting-edge science with deep experience in community conservation.
Carbon Tanzania has over 10 years experience developing carbon projects and is behind 3 award-winning forest carbon projects.
CREDIT APPROACH
Ruvuma credits were designed under Revalue's avoidance approach Model R.
Model R was rated top avoidance approach by Sylvera with the lowest risk score of 2/10 - on par with removals methodologies.
In Ruvuma, Revalue starts from Verra's VM0048 (CCP-approved), then builds additional features on top.
Ruvuma credits go above and beyond existing standards with LiDAR for more accurate biomass measurements, and the first dynamic baseline deployed in an avoidance project. Together, these innovations give you confidence that every credit represents at least 1 ton of CO₂.
Ruvuma also rolls out one of the most comprehensive community baselining and monitoring approaches in the world, developed by Dr. Rumi Naito who developed the social engagement strategy for Katingan.
BEYOND CARBON
The project is fully community-led. When we say community-led, we really mean community-led. Communities don’t just get benefits, they get a % of the revenues from carbon credit sales. Communities run the management of the project and decide where the revenues flow.
The size of the Ruvuma project means that it is a unique opportunity to preserve habitats and support connectivity. Ruvuma strengthens the connection between Nyerere National Park (Tanzania) and Niassa Reserve (Mozambique), protecting one of Africa’s largest contiguous ecosystems.
The project safeguards:
421 bird species, 135 mammals, 76 reptiles and 36 amphibians.
12 globally threatened species.
Second-largest elephant population on the continent.
A 5th of Africa’s remaining wild dogs.
